Conscious Surrender

Conscious Surrender

Are you resistant to the current way of living?

If so, you are not alone.

The worldwide imposition of isolation and social distancing is challenging to most of us. So many of us are accustomed to living in a world where freedom of choice, action, speech and thought are a given. And suddenly they are not.

Do you agree with social distancing? With wearing a face mask in public? With working from home?

The harsh reality is that it doesn't matter if we agree or not. In communities where people are defying these restrictions, policy makers and law enforcement will ensure that you comply, one way or another.

My message here is not whether these measures are right or wrong.

My message is that in this unprecedented time of social restrictions, we still have autonomy in the way that matters most.

We have autonomy over the way we feel and act.

Conscious surrender is not about agreeing with the powers that be - or disagreeing. It is about making a conscious decision that, in the face of this reality, you will surrender your resistance to the circumstances we are currently faced with around the world.

This is also not about liking these restrictions. You can want things to be different, yet still keep yourself in a space of non resistance.

Surrender is giving up what we think should be happening for what is actually happening.

The Law of Least Effort by Deepak Chopra*

The Law of Least Effort teaches that when you struggle against the moment,

you are struggling against the Universe.

There are 3 components to the Law of Least Effort:

~ Acceptance ~ Responsibility ~ Defenselessness ~

Here is a break down of the 3 components.

Acceptance

Accepting things as they are, not as you would wish for them to be, puts you in a space of flow rather than resistance.

Acceptance is not the same as liking the situation; you can accept even though you wish it were different.

Responsibility

You and only you are responsible for how you feel.

Taking responsibility for your feelings and actions allows for the ability to respond in the manner you choose.

Find the seed of opportunity. How can you best use this time to transform yourself and your world?

Defenselessness

Release the need to defend your point of view.

Resistance = more resistance.

When you bend like a reed in the storm, you remain intact as you adapt. But when you stand rigid against the wind, you will simply break.

* The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success: A practical guide to the fulfillment of your dreams. By Deepak Chopra

When you take responsibility for your feelings and actions, you have the ABILITY to RESPOND in the manner you choose.

Why surrender?

Surrender is not about giving up; it's about freeing up your energy.

"What you resist persists"

Imagine this scenario:

You are standing outside and it begins to rain. Hard. Pelting down on you, making you cold and uncomfortable.

Now imagine being really frustrated with this rain, getting wet and cold. But stay there. Stay frustrated and become more agitated because now you are soaked through.

Is standing there making the rain stop? Is focusing all your energy on being pissed off about getting soaked changing the circumstance?

Of course not. That's because you cannot control the rain. You can stand there until it passes, like a fool, and wonder why you're still getting wet. OR you can step out of the rain, into shelter, and wait for the rain to pass.

Either way, you will not change the fact that it's raining. You can be angry all day and night about the rain, but guess what? The rain doesn't care, and the rain isn't going to change for you, no matter how mighty your anger.

This is what conscious surrender is about. This is what Deepak Chopra talks about with the Law of Least Effort. Accept that you cannot change the situation, take responsibility for your actions and feelings, and do it all without any attempt at justification or defensiveness.

None of us can stop the rain. And none of us can change the fact that Covid-19 has changed our lives around the world.

We can, however, decide how we will face each day, if we will stand raging in the storm, demanding for it to end, or if we will accept what we cannot change and put our energy towards something that will make a difference in our lives and the lives of others.

What are you resisting? Where could you surrender, in order to create more flow and opportunity for yourself?
